The Sigikid is one multi-functional crocodile. So multi-functional, in fact, that your baby is bound to play with this stuffed toy for hours and forget to cry. Good! The German company has thought of everything. This learning crocodile has:
– A mouth that zips open
– Legs that detach with buttons
– A tail with velcro, a clip, and a tie
We wish the toy also had:
– A suit and tie to dress up in when it wants to be fancy
– Even more wild colors. Why not?
– A remote-control propeller

At least that’s what my daughter’s best friend’s room is inspired by, with all the colorful stuffed, painted, stick-on creatures. Actually she’s a little outside the box when it comes to calling it a true jungle. Sure, she began with the standard lions, tigers and bears, but oh my, now she also has cows, dogs and bunnies. These are not exactly straight out of the Amazon Rainforest. Instead of jungle, let’s call it an animal kingdom, shall we?
Within this kingdom of hers, the great queen lavishes all of her animal friends with plenty of attention. Imagination rules the land, as she creates stories for each of these furry (and not so furry) friends. In the center of this world are the playful figurines from her Cardboard Pop Up Animal book. With no rhyme or reason to habitat, this toy’s rabbit, bear, deer, cat, baby bear, donkey, goat, dog, goose, and a little bird all live in harmony. And of course, to guide them through many adventures, are a boy and a girl.
After she has popped out the animals and people, she creates even more loyal subjects by tracing and drawing with the cardboard cut-outs. She creates more and more animals and people, all for her glorious storylines that she imagines in her room. She is so engrossed with this that she wants only animal prints on her baby clothes!
Basically, my husband thinks that my daughter’s best friend is building an animal cut-out army to take over the world. Good thing we’re on her good side.

I’ve always selected gifts for my friends’ kids carefully. Not only do I want the child to like it, of course, but I also want the parents to like it. Or not like it. Depends on whether I like or dislike the parents, I guess. The noisier and more annoying the toy I choose is to the parents, the noisier and more annoying the parents are to me. I know. I’m childish. I once bought a horrible toy dinosaur that made loud screeches for the son of a man who I consider one of the biggest loudmouths I’ve ever met. The kid loved it. The father, not so much.
This red tambourine would definitely be for one of my best friends’ kids. The sweet jingles that come out of this little instrument created by French children toymaker Vilac are music to my ears (and with a silly little price, to my wallet, as well). Listening to it really brings a smile to my face.
There are a ton of musical instruments on the market for small children, but a tambourine is perfect for even the tiniest of enthusiasts. Very rarely do you find a toy that’s both musical and educational, no matter the child’s age. Little grasping hands are able to participate in singalongs with random jingles, while older ones can learn to keep a beat along with fellow music makers.
So I guess my secret’s out. The quieter the toy, the more I like you. The louder the toy, the more I like your child. Unless of course it’s a tambourine. Then I like you both.

From “I’m a fireman” to “the dog ate my homework,” seems most things going on in a child’s world involves their imagination. I don’t know how many games of “secret undercover agents underground” we’ve played in our daughter’s room, blinds drawn, mini-flashlights in hands. I also have no idea how many things have been blamed on our dog Dazey, but I’m sure she did only a fraction of them.
This is precisely why the Cardboardesign’s castle is the perfect fit for our creative little household. Our little princess loves to imagine dragons, horses, princes…OK, sometimes it’s ladybugs, penguins and cars…roaming all over the courtyard in front of the castle. Only the really special dolls get the privilege of playing inside the castle walls. They sit around talking about things like ice cream, puppies and tumble class. You know, the topics of royal chit-chat.
What’s great about this castle is that it also engages her artist side—the one that involves markers, stickers and paint. This particular imaginative side is clearly something I want to encourage, but encourage away from my walls and furniture. Because it’s bare, the ruler of the Cardboardesign kingdom can decorate it as they wish—coloring and painting and drawing to their heart’s content.
And I don’t have to be imaginative as to where to put this big castle. It comes with a pack away flat box, so it’s easy to store. How creative!
