What started out last season as a brand committed to producing well-made shirts for boys and girls has now evolved into a line that’s full of eclectic prints, unique separates, and breezy dresses for Portgual-based Wolf & Rita. For its spring summer 2014 collection, A Song for a Perfect Summer, the line chose to incorporate the joyful and festive feel of summertime into each of its designs, as seen with the quirky-cool bird and chili prints, easy-to-wear pieces, and nautical-inspired stripes. The collection as a whole is sophisticated and elegant, but still versatile and kid-friendly due to the soft fabrics and relaxed silhouettes found in each of the pieces. As an added bonus, the brand works hard to protect the planet and its people: the fabrics are all sourced from a 25 mile radius of the companies headquarters, the packaging is either biodegradable or recycled, and the catalogues are printed by a local organization that works with children in need. After featuring Brooklyn-based children’s line Kallio here a few weeks ago, we were excited to see what the brand had in store for its spring/summer 2014 collection. The line, which was started in 2012 by Karina Kallio, “upcycles” vintage men’s t-shirts by turning them into stylish and one-of-a-kind pieces for kids – all done by hand in NYC! Here is a short video explaining how it all works. The clothes are not only unique and creative, but comfortable and easy to wear as well – perfect for playing, running, and jumping in all summer long. Shop here.
Brooklyn-based line Kallio is unlike any other brand out there. The designer, Karina Kallio, takes the term “sustainable fashion” to a whole other level by reworking pre-loved vintage clothing into new, unique, and stylish items for kids. She manages to turn a pair of sleeves into one-of-a-kind harem pants, a flannel jacket into a hooded cape, and a men’s button down into a shirt dress. Pretty neat, right? Not only are these clothes environmentally conscious, but they’re also fun and easy to wear. Be sure to checkout this video that the brand made explaining how it makes its pieces, too!
British kids’ fashion brand Beau LOves is full of comfortable and playful pieces that are stylish and cool yet still quirky and adventurous. The line, which was founded in 2010 by Faye Wilde after her son Beau was born, features a relatively monochromatic color palette (with the occasional punch of mustard yellow in this season’s collection), loads of graphic prints, creative shapes, and ultra-comfy styles. The brand also has an awesome collection of black and white bedding that you can check out here. As an added bonus, the entire line is designed, printed, and manufactured in London to support local businesses and reduce its environmental impact. View the entire collection here!
Macarons is a luxury baby and children’s clothing label based in Germany that focuses on creating sophisticated clothes that are suitable for everyday wear. And just like the French pastry that the line is named after, the collection is full of beautiful colors, unique textures, and interesting shapes! The clothes, which are all made from organic fabrics and eco-friendly dyes, are elegant and modern but still allow children the space and comfort they need to grow and play. Additionally, the two founders developed their own unique textile (the IQ-Fabric) for their winter outerwear. Produced according to the GOTS standard using fair-trade production methods, the fabric is a boiled double-knitted textile made from merino wool on the outside and soft cotton on the inside. The result is a fabric that’s cozy and breathable but still durable enough to protect your child from the elements (you can read more about the IQ-Fabric here). With a commitment to modern design, unique styling, and conscientious manufacturing, Macarons is a line we can definitely get behind! Head on over to the brand’s website to see more.
