Save Handmade Children’s Toys and Products from the CPSIA

Back in 2007, it was found that several large toy and children’s product manufacturers who were outsourcing manufacturing overseas sold hundreds of products in the US that were found to be toxic and unsafe. Our congress acted swiftly, passing the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act in August of 2008 – a step that was absolutely necessary in the manufacturing of children’s toys and one that gives parents peace of mind.

This act, however, may inadvertently put small Handmade Toy and children’s clothing companies in the US, Canada and Europe, out of business. Because this law mandates third party testing, which could cost anywhere from $200 to $4000 per item, the cost of making the product outweighs profit for small, independent designers. The result may be a dramatic decrease in unique and creatively designed products for children and babies.
